ABSTRACT
An unmet need existed in the development of pure, potent, and truly therapeutic botanical based dermatologic products that effectively address cosmetic and other skin conditions, which reverts to the extraction process. Specifically, traditional botanical extract processes use solvents and/or heat processes including steam distillation, solvent extraction, freeze drying or organic solvents such as ethanol, which can actually destroy or harm key active components that make end botanical dermatologic products effective and potent. Derma Vantis, a Brand Labs USA related company, has employed biomimicry (an approach that uses strategies found in nature to solve human health and wellness challenges) to the development of a novel botanical extraction process for creating more robust dermatologic products. This approach uses National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) technology, which replicates certain physiological plant mechanisms in a zero-gravity three-dimensional environment and preserves vital elements of plants as well as also enable the development of more effective, potent, and consistent dermatologic products.
Lastly, this process also enables the ability to extract and preserve essential plant metabolites including carbohydrates, amino acids, vitamins, organic acids, flavonoids and phenolics, essential for effective skin and nail products. Dermatologic products using biomimetic botanical extracts developed in the zero-gravity three-dimensional environment provide a richer and more potent aesthetic product that has been shown to effectively aid the rejuvenation and repair of skin cells as well as reduce the effects of aging.
These specially developed botanical compounds can be combined with active ingredients to form bioavailable active substances that not only seamlessly integrate into the skin's innate processes, but also naturally support skin health. Medtherapies products utilize this technology to product some of the most effective products for foot health.
BACKGROUND
Therapeutic effects of certain plants or botanical extracts are dependent on their phytochemical components, which are grouped into two categories, primary and secondary metabolites, based on their role in the metabolic process. Primary metabolites are similar within all living plant cells and play an essential role in plant metabolism and livelihood. In addition, primary metabolites have been shown to act as precursors of secondary metabolites, which are specialized compounds or byproducts (not directly involved in plant metabolism) produced by the plant cell to engage within the macroenvironment and respond to environmental stressors (Seigler, 1998)
Researchers have evaluated secondary metabolites for their medicinal and therapeutic biological effects, including targeting mechanisms of disease activity and providing pharmacological benefits including dermatological effects (Hussein, 2019), as well as being used for flavorings, pigments, and even recreational drugs (Devika, 2012).
The key to effective dermatologic product development that maintains quality, and efficacy not only lies in targeted botanical extracts or metabolites, but the process employed to obtain these effective botanical extracts and metabolites. It is also important to have the maximum levels of these bioactive agents, especially during plant extraction processes used for botanical ingredients. It is not just being able to obtain the biological, molecular, and chemical compounds being sought out, but it is maintaining its potency and activity to achieve the most effective results utilizing the product developed. This is most important in developing effective dermatologic products. Traditional botanical extraction processes use heat or solvents, which can destroy key plant components, and result in less effective products. Most recently, DermaVantis has employed biomimicry to the development of dermatologic products using National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) technology.
